Tension Type Headache (TTH)/ Muscle Contraction Headache

tension-type-headacheHeadache can be caused due to a variety of reasons, and one of the most common types of headache disorders of the world is Tension Type Headache.

This headache is also known as Muscle Contraction Headache

Features of Tension Type Headache

It is a band like sensation over the head, as if someone has tied a band on the head and is pulling it. There is a feeling of pressure on the head.

Its also known as “Featureless headache” because usually it is not associated with nausea, vomiting, flashes of light, fear of sounds.

This type of headache usually occurs on both sides of the head.

The headache is associated with muscle tension, contraction of the muscles of the face and head muscles.

What can cause such type of Headache ?

  • Stress
  • Prolonged working hours
  • Anxiety
  • Lack of sleep
  • Low pain tolerance as compared to other individuals
  • People who perceive simple touch as pain
  • Idiopathic, cause unknown

How to manage such type of headache ?

The management strategies are divided into Episodic Management, and Prophylaxis (that is to prevent future headaches, and try to treat the disorder from its roots)

Episodic Management

– Pain killers, NSAIDS – such as Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, Naproxen.

Combination of painkillers and muscle relaxants is also beneficial

Prophylactic Management (to prevent future attacks)

Amitryptyline is one of the most effective drugs for this.

Other drugs –

  • Tricyclic Antidepressants
  • Gabapentin
  • Topiramate
  • Mirtazepine
  • Sodium Valproate

Behavioural Counselling

Psychotherapy

Relaxation Techniques

Neck Massage

Yoga

Meditation
