What is an MRI scan?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of organs, tissues, and structures inside the body. It helps doctors diagnose a wide range of conditions without using radiation.
Is an MRI scan painful?
No, an MRI scan is painless. You simply lie still on a scanning table while the machine captures images. Some people may find the machine noisy or feel uncomfortable in enclosed spaces, but the procedure itself does not cause pain.
How long does an MRI scan take?
Most MRI scans take between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the body part being examined and the complexity of the scan. Certain specialized scans may take longer.
Do I need to prepare before an MRI?
Preparation depends on the type of MRI. In most cases, you’ll be asked to remove metal objects such as jewelry, watches, and belts. Some scans may require fasting or a contrast dye injection, and your doctor will provide specific instructions beforehand.
Is MRI safe?
Yes, MRI is generally very safe because it does not use X-rays or radiation. However, it may not be suitable for people with certain metal implants, pacemakers, or medical devices. Always inform your healthcare provider about any implants or medical conditions before the scan.
